I was trying to order a blackberry curve online and I was prompted to choose what data packages i wanted. The problem is there is you HAVE to select a package at either 24 dollars a month or 35 for unlimited. Is there anyway to buy this phone without having the requirement of one of these packages? thanks

A frequent question, easy answer: all blackberries need a data plan, they all need to be registered with RIMs server. So no, you can't get around having to pay for a data plan with a blackberry.

Whenever possible I try to look into the details of that situation, usually it's a mistake. Perhaps you're friend knows a loop-hole but otherwise even T-Mobile has to abide by that RIM data requirement.

I had a long talk with a friend of mine who works for Verizon about this when i got my Curve, and what you are saying is mostly true. Each BB has to be registered and Web accessable in order for the service of the phone to function. Your friend who said they dont have a data package is incorrect. he or she just must have been mistaken as to what they signed up for. Nevertheless I would say go to a local store to sign up bc Im only paying 27.99 a month for unlimited and I signed up in a store. A bit of a bummer but so far DEF. Worth it. Having a full browser, AIM, Yahoo Messanger, and all of my email accounts in my pocket at all times is worth the extra cash.

Phone Model: BB Curve 8320

Just wanted to state that got new BB curve 8320 from TMO w/o data plan. This can be done. No gimmicks, no backdoor specials. YMMV Good luck to anyone wanting this phone and plan. In case it is necessary, have a myfave family plan with 5 lines, 3 are razors, 2 are BB curves, just got them, 1 with a data plan (unlimited), 1 w/o any data plan, TMO just puts on a "BB enabler feature", the plan also has unlimited wifi calling, unlimited M2M, and unlimited messaging and IM. The only prob we have at the moment is the phone w/o the data plan can only receive regular text (SMS?) messages. Anything with a pic, etc. isn't working at the moment. She also CANNOT use IM, and TMO keeps telling me different stories on that problem.

I bet if they reactivated the BB data plan then you'd have the provisioning to be able to send/receive pix/flix. Typically for VZW if the data feature is blocked entirely then the pix/flix messaging stops working, too.

Verizon is currently the only provider that requires a data package.

With Sprint you can get one of the Simply Everthing Plans priced from $49-$99 and it includes unlimited data including blackberry. If you use a BES Server they charge an extra $20.

Actually all they have to do is set a feature through their online account to allow pix msgs to work. T-mobile doesn't require a data plan but when you don't have one you do need to have that feature enabled. It's actually called blackberry feature enabler and it says "This no cost feature allows customers with certain Blackberry devices who are not signed up for BlackBerry service to enjoy phone features such as Picture Messaging, Instant Messaging and t-zones."
Verizon has an agreement with RIM that any blackberry device active on their network requires a data plan.
