on the packaging says you can buy ringtones(even though the phone is not internet or gin capable) conflicting info some say the packaging is incorrect others say you can download polyphonic ringtones through enhanced text messaging on the vzw site.if so where on the vzw site can i do this?

The website the manual tells you to go to is vtext.com, but I don't see how that will help you all to entirely. I would recommend searching through the premium providers, they usually have you enter your number online or text them a request, and they will send the ringtone to your phone. Ensure you aren't subscribed to anything after though, sometimes the providers will keep billing you after the first one. You can stop the subscription by texting them back "stop"

what i usually do is use the pix messaging, upload my custom ringtone to the phone as music and have it sent to my phone through a text message.
