when did this kick in? Can I still upgrade my phone and add more minutes without losing my unlimited text feature that I have?

The old unlimited feature that was maybe like 6 to 10 years ago isn't even available to dig up anymore so no you can't get it back. The new options for unlimited are to move to a Nationwide Select plan, which is $20 more for a single line plan for unlimited messaging, and $30 for a family share to have unlimited.
