What i can suggest is if you have insurance in your Sprint phone.Have it checked coz as what you have said you have dropped your phone lots of times as well. There might be some electronic components inside your phone that needs fixing.
To avoid your phone in going on roaming, you can try going to the settings of your phone and choose roaming menu.From there change it to sprint only.The effect is you can't receive or make a call if you're outside sprint coverage.The good thing is you can avoid being charged roaming charges and eventually you won't get a high bill.
Roaming is free on all plans now, including mine. so that wouldn't matter. The phone does not go into roaming when this happens . it will just sit at the zero bar mark for a few seconds or longer, then receive bars

Their is still a proviso on free roaming. If you roam more then you don't, you will retroactively pay for roaming for the entire month.

If your plan has roaming included. If you go on roaming during your daytime minutes. Those minutes will be subtracted from your plan. And if you go went over your mins, you will be charge overage and not roaming charges.
