My contract is currently out and I was looking into getting the Dare with my new every two. However, when I was going to buy the phone yesterday, they required that I change my plan to the newer version. I'm currently paying 59.99 for two lines with 500 minutes, but they're asking me to upgrade to a 69.99 plan with 700 which is of course $10 more. We don't usually don't go close to the 500 minutes so I don't see the need to pay the extra $10.

Since I'm currently out of contract, does this give me any kind of leverage with some verizon rep? Can't I threaten to leave Verizon (which I'm considering for att/iphone) and hopefully get them to let me have what I want?

The phone will require an updated plan due to its data capabilities, so you will have to update if you want the Dare. If you're over the age of 65 though there is a plan for two lines that costs around $60 for 450 minutes. You won't have unlimited nights and weekends though, just a thousand to share. If you qualify for that plan and it works for you the Dare is an option. Being out of contract just gives you the benefit of being able to leave with no fees, or renew with promotions and a discount off of a device.

No leverage. You have to be on a nationwide plan.

actually there's a $59.99 550min 2 line share plan also that can be offered to customers near or out of contract with unlim nights & weekends. I'd ask for that one. it'll work with the Dare

One hitch to that last post, you can't upgrade when you're on that $59.99 plan. My advice would be to get the phone, don't activate it and call customer service instead. Tell them that you may leave which is why you didn't activate the phone, and inquire about getting that plan initiated after you activate it. Complete all this with the service rep on the line, assuming they give you a "yes" answer. There are likely other ways to get the plan you're looking for, but if you activate the Dare you're contract will extend so the plan above won't be available.
