no it is not true, the only detail you can get is numbers to and from. the device (phone) will hold a history where you can see in and out messages. if the inbox and out box have been cleared its gone

Elmo is correct and he would know before anyone does.
If you're that concerned about this, I'd get ahold of his phone when it's not in his possession and look at it for yourself. Of course, he may be smart enough to have deleted his messages, which will thwart your efforts.

And if he is smart enough to delete his txt messages u can take it one step farther and lock that specific application assuming u know the phone's unlock code. It's usually 1234 or 0000 by default if no one changed it. To lock txt messages for an example it's usually an option found on (some) phones not all (usually on newer phones) under options => security or settings => security. than u should see something along the lines which say's lock phone, lock app, u want to choose lock application and the rest should be self explanatory.
That probably won't work. usually you can't lock messages until after their sent or recieved. and even so this function is meant to prevent accidental deletion and is easily reversed with a few key strokes.

There is a spyware available for purchase that will allow you to view text messages. I don't have the website, but google it. I found it once, and then saw it featrued on the Today Show.
