Hi there.

Cell phone novice here.

So my contract with Verizon ends on December 2nd. My plan was to wait it out and look for a good deal on new phones and plans either with Verizon, or another provider.

However.

My wife lost her cellphone. It's gone. She needs a phone.

Okay. So here's what I want to avoid:

1. Paying boat loads of money at Verizon for a new phone.
2. Mandatory contract extensions.

I figured I could buy an older phone on Craigslist for a good price, but how do I get service for that phone without getting screwed by Verizon?

Post December 2nd I'd love to have new phones with a good provider and no contract. Is that a pipe dream?

Any thoughts and advice appreciated.

if you get a used phone from somewhere else and activate it on your plan, it won't extend your contract at all. one tip though - if you buy it on craigslist or ebay, before you actually purchase the phone, get the serial number so you can call verizon and have them check it. if a phone has been reported lost or stolen, no one else can activate it, so have them check to make sure the phone you buy hasn't been reported. hope that helps.

I've had a few customers tell me that buying a verizon pay as you go phone and having the esn activated works. I know this works for ATT and TMobile, but I've been hearing rumors it's working for Verizon Impulse phones as well. Those phones start at about 20 bucks.

That is true, the prepay devices can be used as replacements, but usually people end up paying more than $20 for them.

save those old phones of yours, seems like people are junking them when they get new ones!
