Every time I sign on to AOL Instant Messenger it connects, then times out during the receiving buddies phase at around 80% then says "Communication Error. Please check settings and try again." This is not a new error, it's been occurring since I bought the phone. In fact, I had the same error on my two previous phones, a motorola razr v3 and a samsung t209 (though it did work intermittently on those two).

What day did it begin happening? Tmobile had a data outage that stopped everything from working not long ago and the system could have still been recovering.

Do you have the BB data package for your phone? If you do not, you still have to have the backberry enabler (free) added to your account for IM to work.

I do not have the data package. Should that matter, though? Since IM uses text messages? That doesn't explain why I get the same message on my other two phones either.
What is the blackberry enabler?
ETA: I just looked up the enabler, and it seems as thought I have it as I can send and recieve MMS on my phone.

yes it does use text messages but to initially set up the IM services you need a connection to blackberry servers. even though mms is working that feature is totally dependent on t-mobile, not rim. is the enabler on your account?
