The I -Phone is supposed to be locked to the AT&T network for 5 years, one year has passed but there are 4 more years to go. You are not supposed to be able to get an unlock code for them yet but there is always someone able to get the code for you IF you don't want AT&T as your carrier. The I-phones are designed for data so a package at this stage is mandatory unless you want to pay .01 cent per kb, which, trust me, will add up! As for the other phones you mentioned, if you are going to be using the net at all on your phone then it is more sensible to get a data pkg. Mobie TV is a seperate feature that you have to pay for but isn't mandatory and features can be added or removed at will.

i belive as of the ninth of september att will follow the other carriers and require a pda of bb data plan on all Blackbeery and iphones if you use one of these devices the plan will be add on your account to prevent enormouis data and download charges that all pda and blackberry users ivariably use. if you already have a data device you will not be required to have this. however if you buy a new or used PDA or blackberry and put your sim in the device after the 4th september today the data plan will be automaticly added to your account.
