I have a sony ericssonw5801 and can not turn it off, it says to press 1 and hold, I did that and it connects to my voicemail

why don't you just use the power button? worse case scenario you should pull off the battery cover and take out the battery.

Just in case you don't know where the power button is, look at the top of your phone. The small black button is the power button.
