I switched to AT&T GSM about a year ago and have never been so dissatisfied with a service that I'm paying for. I can't believe I give these guys almost $70 a month. I thought perhaps my phone (Nokia 8390) might be the culprit, so I decided to call and see if I could negotiate a cheap or free replacement. I've had my eye on the T616/610 for awhile, so I asked. The best deal I could get was $149. Strange...I guess I figured I could get a better deal since I've been using the same service since 1992 (kinda...CellOne initially). But no...the guy wouldn't budge. Turns out my contract is up in the beginning of January, so now I'm considering taking my number to a new carrier; the current leader is T-Mobile with a T610 (-$50 after rebate at Amazon).
So here's the question...how's T-Mobile in SF? I've been poking around the reception guide, and it seems to fair better than AT&T for the most part. My thinking is "How could it not?" Extremely spotty coverage, bad connections even with a good signal, drops, etc. Surely there must be something better.
Thank god I found this website. I've been looking for something like this for awhile.

Go into your initial set-up in your phone, Go to networks, SEARCH for new network, This will tweak your phone for a better signal, It switches towers (I can switch between 3 different towers in my area ) - I am near A highway, It depends on your area.
This should improve your signal (Better Reception Overall) - Some phones have manual network, as you can choose the best one. I have a Motorola T720i phone, I went under networks, I had 2 bars for signal strength, I now have SIX BARS all the time, and it switched the towers. Get a phone with an antenna. It does make a difference. Nokia configurations are somewhat limited, On Nokia 8390 Go to phone settings: – No go to System selection. You should be able to configure the phone from there. – Good Luck

I've tried this...I have it set to manual system select, because otherwise it would roam onto Cingular's network. Unable to pick specific towers on the Nokia from what I can tell. Thanks anyway...I'm done with AT&T for now. -chris

Although Tmobile/Cingular have somewhat decent reception, be careful of the phone you get. I recently tried the Nokia 3650 and SE T610 back to back in Sunnyvale (right outside the store I just bought the T610 in). I have to say that the T610 would not get a signal where the Nokia 3650 could get at least 2 bars and I could carry on a coversation. You might be disappointed to find that the T610 will probably not let you have conversations indoors because of the poor reception and also because of the poor cingular network. Just FYI....

Ended up going with the T610 and T-Mobile which is amazingly better than my previous 8390 and AT&T. For the most part my new phone works everywhere, including places where I didn't have a signal with my old one. I managed to get the phone for $99 on Amazon with $200 in rebates and a free BT headset.
Overall much happier camper.
