Closing comments on prior posts by BUCZACZ re difficulty with DKU-5 cable.

After an initial glitch, I got my IBM Pentium-IV machine running Windows-XP-Professional to recognize the Nokia3589i telephone through the DKU-5 cable using the Nokia PC Suite software. Please note that if DKU-5 does not have a dedicated USB port, you may need to do a "new hardware search" on reinserting the DKU-5 cable after it has been removed to allow the port to be used with another device.

Please, Please tell what you did to get it to work. I've spent 2 evening now trying to get my dku 5 cable to work with windows xp pro and my 3589i phone and it's doing exactly what you described yours to be doing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

This is follow up on earlier posts on problems with installing Nokia DKU-5 data cable.

As I recall, the installation into my Windows XP machine went smoothly when I followed the instructions. I have given up on trying to install data cable on Win98 machine.

(1) to prepare the machine, I used control panel to delete failed prior Nokia installations.

(2) I then install the Nokia prep. software from Nokia CD

(3) I then plugged cable into USB port and machine recognized there was new hardware.

(4) I don't recall if I then designated driver for new hardware or machine found driver all by itself.

At this point I used the control panel to make sure that the machine really was communicating with the cable.

(5) I then loaded up the communication software package. The software package had previously been downloaded from the Nokia web site.

(6) I then plugged cable into telephone. It took many back and forth actions to get software to finally recognize the telephone. I'm not certain exactly what was done, but I do know it was not straight forward.

(7) I was then able to use the software to load numbers into telephone. I was not able to figure out how to load numbers from a data base into the telephone. I tried creating a tab-delimited file that mimicked the back-up file, but obviously I missed something. I have not tried moving numbers into OUTLOOK and then from OUTLOOK into telephone using the synchronize button. One should not add numbers to an external list and then copy the whole list onto the telephone. As I recall, I ended up with multiple copies of telephone number entries on the telephone.

Keep in mind that if you disconnect the DKU-5 cable from the computer, when you reinsert it into the USB port, you may have to go back and repeat the hardware identification and hardware driver location procedure. This contrasts with my UMAX scanner. If I unplug my UMAX scanner from a USB port, use the port for another device, and then plug it back in; the software immediately recognizes that the scanner is back and the drivers are ready to work. Fortunately, my IBM Pentium-IV has five USB ports, so I can leave the DKU-5 cable connected all the time.

Thanks for the reply. I noticed my phone did different things sometimes each time I plug it in and tried to get things going. Here's a question. After you did the install from the nokia cd do you have a PL-2303 usb to serial adapter and a nokia connectivity adapter cable in you add/remove area of your control panel? If I use just the dku5 download from the nokia site I only have the connectivity adapter and the usb driver for the cable is never found when I plug it in. If I install from the cd it installs both of those and the usb driver for the cable is found but things still haven't worked properly.
Thanks for the help.

I suspect you to must also be an engineer by training to continue to have the perseverance to continue to try to get the DKU-5 to work.

You said, "my phone did different things sometimes each time I plug it in ." My question, plug what into what? If you mean the USB port, the answer is YES. If you mean the connection between the DKU-5 cable and the telephone, the answer is NO.

You asked, "do you have a PL-2303 usb to serial adapter and a nokia connectivity adapter cable in you add/remove area of your control panel? " My sfwr Add/Remove shows "Nokia Connectivity Adaptor Cable DKU-5" and "Nokia PC Suite 5.50." Device Manager shows the Nokia Cable under Multi-Port Serial Adaptors, and under Ports(COM & LPT) it shows "Port1 on Nokia Adaptor(COM3)."

Re using DKU-5 sfwr downloaded from Nokia site versus the CD. I believe I tried both on my Win98 machine with the same unsatisfactory result. I did not try the downloaded DKU-5 sfwr on my WinXP installation as the CD sfwr worked. The Nokia CD and the Nokia DKU-5 cable downloads do not produce the same set of files. The datax.cab files bear the same 8Sept03 date whether generated by CD or download.

Nokia technical assistance attempted to walk me through the installation process on my Win98 machine. It was I rather than Nokia Tech Assist that recommended we give up on trying to make the DKU-5 work on my Win98 machine. You might try calling Nokia technical assistance. They were very very accommodating, helpful and knowledgeable.

When assembling these answers to your questions, I realized that the set up of my IBM Pentium IV computer may be the reason for its working with DKU-5. Other than a keyboard, USB mouse, built-in ethernet, and the DKU-5 cable, no other devices have ever been connected to the nearly virgin IBM PC. In contrast, my WIN98 machine has TELCO modem card, Ethernet Card, laser printer on parallel port, impact check printer on serial port, scanner on USB, and PS/2 mouse & keyboard.

Assuming you get your DKU-5 cable working, I'd be interested in hearing about your experiences transfering data to the telephone.

Well I finally got it working to some degree. I made sure to go back and uninstall everything. I even went into the reg. and searched for anything Nokia and deleted it and also searched my HD for anything Nokia and deleted it. I then installed the cable driver and PC suite. The thing that I found is that I have to have the cable and phone plugged in when I turn on my computer and I can't unplug and plug back in or it won't work until I power down and restart. I've been able to upload to my gallery using the image converter and I have used the phone editor and the content copier (even though I can't figure out what I can do with the data I load to my computer as far as chaging it.) The only thing I haven't been able to do is upload ringtones to my phone. I use the sound converter and everything is good until I go to upload to phone and it starts and then I get in error msg. that it couldn't complete the upload. I'm still working on that one. icon_biggrin.gif

Glad to hear you got DKU-5 working. However, I would not recommend that others follow your lead and attempt to edit the Registry.

Like yourself, I found that getting the DKU-5 data cable working was only the first problem to be resolved. Operation of the software for transfering information between the computer and the cell telephone is not always intuitively obvious. I'd like to hear from anyone that has found how to transfer lists of telephone numbers from a data base format (CSV) or Spread sheet (Excel) into the telephone.

Yeah you've got to be careful with messing with the registry.
Here's something else I found out about being a verizon customer. Apparently they disable being able to use PC suite to upload ringtones and games. So you have to pay for them with the Get it Now option. It looks like though that MobileMB or Oxygen Phone Manager II might get you past it. I'm gonna see if I can find it and download it and see how it works.

I'm a bit confused, i have a 3300, and it came with a DKU2 cable, since all the softwares I found mentioned DKU5 and not 2, does that mean i wont be able to use it the same way as a DKU5? e.g. uploading pics/tones. If there's a software that I could use with the DKU2, plz email me, I've been searching the internet for weeks now and starting to lose hope, steven_primekiller@hotmail.com, thanks...
