OK, first off this is for people with Prolific DKU-5 cables. If you have done the stuff in this thread and you still have problems you may have a Prolific cable. For give me if some of this has already been stated on this thread, I have read so many today I can't rememer which one is which; but I am posting on all of them to bring what I have found together.
I only know this works with (although it will likely help more):
Windows XP Pro
Prolific DKU-5 (see later for how to find out if this is what you have)
Nokia 3100b
OK, first check and see if you have a prolific cable in your registry.
Start, Run, type "regedit" (no quotes), hit ok
Then go throgh to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
+ CurrentControlSet
++ Enum
+++ USB
If in "USB" you have an entry: "Vid_067b&Pid_2303" then you have a Prolific cable.
(I think the 2303 part is what is important)
NOTE: I recived a url to download drivers from the retaler of the cable, but although the driver installed, no programs could see my phone. (MobiMB, Oxygen, Nokia PC Suite)
I found the working driver by checking the "File" box and searching for "2303"
A good ways from the top I found and downloaded this:
-----------------------------
wd_pl-2303.zip
PL-2303H/X/HX Installshield Driver Setup Program v2.0.0.12 for Win98SE/ME v2.0.0.18 for Win2K/XP (XP Logo Certified) for Prolific USB VID/PID Only
-----------------------------
There are other drivers, such as 2303x, so it is my guess that you just match your registry entry and OS to which driver you need.
After this I just installed it, restarted, and pluged in my cable, windows found the driver and installed it to COM3. (Named Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port)
I had to restart because I had removed the older drivers, but you may have to anyway.
Then I got MobiMB to connect. Then connected with Nokia PC Suite 6.2.18. I have read several places that the Nokia PC Suite will not work with a generic cable, but I had no trouble what so ever. I just went to connections checked "Serial cable", clicked "Configure..." and chose Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port (COM3). And it worked fine from then on.
PLEASE, reply with questions, coments, problems, or at least tell me if it worked.
Lastly, does anyone know where to get some good java apps for your phone? (J2ME)
Hope this helps,
ST

Well, I read all this forum, and did not find anyone that actually made the DKU-5 cable to work with Win98 or Win98SE.
I have the original Nokia DKU-5 cable and, despite all my eforts (and I work as a IT engeneering), it did not work at all with Win98SE, although it did work with XP.
Does anyone there (ANYONE!) made it work with Win98SE?
All I know is that the xp drivers form this sight do not work with XP.

I've been fighting with my Nokia 3200 and new Prolific DKU-5 cable for three days now. I have the drivers installed correctly and showing up on COM4 as "prolific USB-to-serial..." Unfortunately the MobiMB software won't connect. The phone shows "data enhancement is not supported". Nothing in the Nokia PC Synch (Version 6.2.18 ) software will connect. The phone shows "data enhancement connected" every time I plug it up to the DKU-5 cable and the PC seems happy with the cable drivers. I just can't get any software to talk to the phone! Got any ideas what to try next?

In my case this is not a help. {Even if it was it would be rather a nuisance to have to shut down the computer each time one put the cell phone back in the charger}
The DKU 5 is hybrid device which connects then cell phone - in my case a Nokia 7250i - to my PC to synchronise with Outlook contacts and warn on the arrival e-mail messages. It must have been originally designed to work with a serial port because it creates a virtual serial port in Device manager that allows the phone to connect to the PC via an USB port.
I find DKU 5 it is very erratic about connecting. Sometimes it connects nicely when I put the cell phone into the socket but mostly it does not and I have to run the Nokia Phone Connector from Control Panel at least once to establish the link. I am surpirsed that for such a good phone Nokia have not come up with anything better: the hard ware and software appear to have been created in 2002 and the driver is not digitally signed. I just wonder if it will work at all when SP 2 is released on us by Micorsoft in the next few weeks?

So now I am confused as to what I need to do to get this bloody dku-5 cable and the software to communicate between my pc and phone...
I have the prolific cable according to the methods posted by stabor23... Do I just install the drivers from http://tech.prolific.com.tw/visitor/v_welcome.asp and forget about the dku-5 drivers? And THEN install the nokia suite?
The reason I ask is because I am now having trouble w/ the computer picking up the phone... I installed the cable so that under Device Manager I see "Prolific USB-to-Serial Bridge (COM3)" so I THINK the cable installation worked. Yet, whenever I plug the phone to the cable (the cable is already attached to the computer) the phone would display ready for data but then 2 seconds later, display connection ended. I am able to see the phone under Nokia Application Installer but then when I try to transfer files... it wouldn't pick up the phone!!!
GRRR!!!
Please help. Thanks.

I have a original Nokia DKU-5 cable, and I couldn't make it works with my Win98SE system...
After formatting my machine, re-installing Win98SE, installing the Nokia drivers from CD, the connection still not working. Every time I connect my DKU-5 into an USB port, Windows recognizes (or not!) it as a "unknown device"...
Does anybody here knows how can I make it works? The USB ports are OK, and I have installed Win98SE many times!
Thanks!!!
