Hi,
I have just purchased a Nokia 3100 last month, and recently got a data cable
DKU-5 to connect.
I downloaded the latest cable driver from Nokia and also the PC suite.
I did the following: first installed the cable driver, then connected the USB cable to the USB port of the computer and the other end to the mobile.
But the driver does not seem to reconize the cable.
Everytime my PC tells me a new hardware is found and tries to find the driver!
I tried reinsalling the cable driver but it gave me a repair or remove option.
what could have gone wrong? a another thing is how do you connect to the com port when the cable is a USB ? is that that you need a serial to usb converter.
I have only one com port which is connected to my serial modem.I use a P4
windows XP home .
I like to hear from you all on how to get this cable to work???

check whether the cable is dku-5 or dku-2, it happened to me too!
you can check from the usb jack end of the cable, there it is written, then you would have to find a compatible driver, but as far as i know you couldn't possibly use the dku-2 cable for a 6610. for more infor. you should check up the nokia site or the supplier.

Like prior post, I too have not been able to get Win98 to recognize DKU-5 data cable.
System is 1.7 GHz Pentium IV running Win98 with all Microsoft Updates.
Data cabe software appears to have installed correctly from CD.
When DKU-5 cabe is connected, machine recognizes that there is new hardware connected to the USB controller, but it labels it as Unknow Device. All attempts to associate a new/better driver with this Unknown Device have failed. At one point, very late last night, I did get the machine to identify that the DKU-5 cable was attached to my computer, but the machine indicated it was not operational, and so I "removed" the hardware. I've not been able to replicate that installation.
When I ordered cable, listing said Window98 compatible. The instructions say Window98 SE is required. What is it about Win 98 SE that is needed?
Can one get it to work with plain Win 98? (I'd try it on my Win XP machine, but that machine warns of software compatibility problems.)

I have the DKU5 cable, it came with nokia 3300 and it works fine with that included software with no additional drivers(Nokia Audio Manager 3.1). However, the same cable should be compatible with 3200/6200 and Nokia Connection Manager will not recognize the connection. I have Win98 SE and have the same problem as other users, so obviously there is a problem beyond just the 98/SE differences. I downloaded the latest drivers off of Nokia's website the same as some of you, and no luck. I have been trying to locate a direct .ini or .inf file to load instead of using the driver .exe file on nokia's site, but I can't locate a directory where the driver is dumped to, nor could I locate the .ini or .inf online. Keep this post going so we might eventually solve this problem.

This is addition information on my post of two days ago.
I too am unable to locate any .inf file. However, when you click on file
Nokia_DKU_5.exe (from CD) or DKU5.exe (downloaded from Nokia website), it unzips 17 files, one of which is called Setup.exe. When you open set up, you get the install shield wizzard for the Nokia Connectivity Adaptor Cable, and there are three alternatives: Modify, Repair, or Remove. If you select "modify" you are informed that it is unavailable. If you selected "repair", it goes ahead and "repairs" the files. If you say "delete" , it reportedly deletes the files. If after they have been deleted, you go back again and ask it to modify, it takes a much longer time, indicative that it is copying many more files.
At the end it says that Nokia Adaptor Cable has been installed, but the machine still does not recognize it even if you re-boot the machine.
When you connect the cable to Nokia 3589i, it says ready for data. If you try installing Nokia PC Suite 5.05, it will search but not find the USB where the cable is connected. Its search is consistent with Window's search. You can specify Com 1,2,3, or 4, but I don't know how the USB ties into any one of those.
I do know that my machine does quickly find other things that have been connected to the USB port including scanner and optical mouse. If not sure if my USB is a USB 1 or USB 2. I suspect USB2 because computer has an Intel board designed for use with Pentium IV CPU's. I would not think that telephone needed the speed of the USB-2 standard.
BOTTOM LINE... I have yet to figure out how to communicate with Nokia 3589i. Nokia help desk has acknowledged receipt of my inquiry, but I've yet to receive a reply. Do hope others with same problem have found solution.

musicman23:
You don't have a DKU-5, you've got a DKU-2. This cable is only used for uploading music (with some other phones it should work with PC Suite - look at the compatibility list on nokia.com for further informations).
buczacz:
The cable uses a virtual Com port for connection. If the cable is plugged and correct installed the Com port should be something between 4 to 6.
Are you sure, you've followed the installion guide for the DKU-5 cable? If you don't you can screw it completly.

Last night at Midnight I gave up on trying to get my machine to recognize DKU-5 cable.
I believe I have precisely followed the install procedure several times including making sure there were no other items connected to any USB ports. (I even got an adaptor so I could move my mouse from the USB port to the PS/2 mouse connection.) To make sure I'm doing it correctly, I've printed out the instructions, so I can check the steps as I go along. A possible glitch might be the directory where the initial program is installed. I have a directory on my computer called "installs" where I place all the files associate with installing various software and hardware. Perhaps the software assumes it is in C:\Program Files\Nokia. However, it does not suggest that it should be placed in that location; it merely asks where you want to put it.
Nokia has suggested that I call their technical support line and have them walk me through the process. I'll let you know the result.

Add on to prior BUCZACZ post. The prior posts detail my efforts to get my Win98 machine (a Pentium IV processor with Intel motherboard) to recognize the DKU-5 cable. I finally did get the machine to recognize DKU-5 cable, but I could not get data link software to run.
Spoke at length with Nokia tech. (1) Found that had to use Internet Explorer to open initial set up file from the CD. My default browser is Netscape 7.02; it required that the file "setup.exe" be saved to C:\. The alternative approach to open file from the RUN box also did not work. When I changed my default browser to Internet Explorer, I was able to open file and step through the required dialogue boxes.
Having done that, there were still more problems. The machine still did not recognize the cable hardware. My Intel motherboard has two USB ports. When the cable was moved to the port closest to the case, the machine began to recognize the DKU-5 cable.
The next task was to get it to install the right driver. Win98 kept going to a file VSPPORT.inf. I have forgotten how we finally forced it to go to the CD to get the driver. It still said it could not find the hardware and gave a choice of COM 1, COM 2, COM 3, COM 4 or other. I typed in COM 5, the port the machine had previously reported as the associated port.
I was then able to load the Nokia PC Suite 5.05 as it did find the DKU-5 cable. It completed its installation and put an icon in the small start window. BUT, when I went to load data on to the telephone, the program said that it could not use COM 5 because it was already being used by another application. We tried deleting an application associated with moving photographs from a CamCorder, but it was of no help.
I then tried to assign Nokia cable to a port other than Port 5. In the process, the machine lost the link and the connection to the proper driver. Nokia PC Suite is thus diabled.
IGiving up on my Win98 machine, I then tried to install on a brand new IBM 8183-21U Pentium IV PC running Windows XP professional with the Lotus application suite. When I initially installed the first software using IE, it didn't seem to go through the entire install process. When I plugged in the cable, the machine found the hardware, but could not find the desired driver. The machine was looking for file usbvsp.sys on the Nokia CD. I could not find any such file on the Nokia CD. I will say that contrary to the instructions, I could not disconnect all USB hardware while doing the installation; on that machine the mouse connection is via the USB.
Given that difficulties were encountered on two different machines, both of which were manufactured by reputable companies, my conclusion to date is that the software package provided with the Nokia DKU-5 Cable is not of a very durable design.

It's possible then that I have a DKU-2 cable and not a DKU-5, if that's the type that comes with the nokia 3300. If so, the DKU-5 software won't work with it correct? Do I need to go download DKU-2 specific manager in order to sync up, which means the DKU-5 software isn't backwards compatible? That would be kind of silly, but please let me know what you think I should do. I definitely installed the DKU5 software properly, but seeing as how I have 3300,3200,6200 I'd like 1 set of cable and software that could work with all of them. Any ideas?

The DKU-5 as well as the PC Suite won't work with the 3300. (with some other phones DKU-2 and PC Suite work, why? Don't ask me)
The 3200 and the 6200 need a DKU-5 cable. Or IrDA.
