I went to the VZW store yesterday with the intent of picking up a Voyager. I was unable to because it was the wrong date in the monthly billing cycle (long story), but there were a few things that the reps there told me that brought up a few questions:
1. I was told that a data plan is now mandatory and that for $15/mo you get unlimited web browsing. The rep told me that the voyager connects to 3G, and not wireless networks. Is it possible to connect to wireless networks or solely 3G, and is there a decently reliable way to find out if I would even get good enough 3G coverage in my area to use the net? This is slightly annoying because I had no intention of getting a data plan but hey if I can actually use it then why not?
2. I was told that I can not get my Gmail directly onto my phone, but I could use the browser to just login and check email that way. Is this true or is there another way to get my email from gmail. The rep told me that gmail should be coming soon but he was kinda shady.
3. I was unaware that there's a $20 upgrade fee to get a new phone now. if you buy the phone online from VZW do you still incur the $20 fee?
Any help would be very much appreciated

Some quick answers. First, only Blackberry you have to get a data plan, Not the voyager. he's full of it and trying to sell u stuff u dont need.
Gmail I dont know. Sorry.
Upgrade, again Full of yahoo. I just upgraded 4 out of my 5 phones and none had an upgrade fee. I also upgraded 1 of the phones and a different store and at a different day.
I have the Data plan for $15.00. Only reason is for web browsing and also I use ORBS and I get streaming Videos, like CNN, ABC, Discover channel, Live news, etc etc etc.

The upgrade fee depends on your calling plan, call customer service to validate whether or not the fee was correct. Gmail can work with the correct application on the phone, but there is a monthly fee for the program. And use the thirty day grace period to check the service in your area.

Found something interesting. Seems your rep was right to a point. I heard after the 14th of November that the majority of phones will require some sort of data plan. Example all smartphones and like the Dare and Voyager. Get your contract before the 14th I guess.

I just got a Voyager today.
Yes, G-mail can be accessed through "mobile email". When you go to add an account, it will provide a list of email services - just choose "other". And all you have to do is put in your email address and password, you don't even need to do any fancy setup. (Whether mobile email will cost anything depends on your plan, obviously. But it's no different than using mobile email with other accounts.)
Also, I wasn't required to get a data plan (though I chose to) and I wasn't charged an upgrade fee.
