my mom said she called verizon and was wondering why i went over my limit last month in texts. and the guy told her that they can send her a log of all my text MESSAGES. if she bluffing?
also my friend said a couple years ago, his mom requested to get a bill with text messages attached.
again, not just "to" or "from" info, but the actual messages.

No, they're not the actual messages, just a log of what numbers the messages were sent to and recieved by.
The only way that someone can actually get the messages of what was sent or recieved is to subpeona the logs in a court of law. That's it.
I'm guessing dear ol' mom was bluffing to scare you into staying in line with the texting. Course, you could always try to talk her into an unlimited messaging plan, and you wouldn't have to worry about going over you messaging limit.

i told my friend that, but he said verizon does things differently than say, at&t(what you have). he said he saw with his own two eyes, messages he sent to his other friends and it came in the mail because his mom requested. but this was 2 years ago, i dont know if the policy has changed.

Okay, I HAVE AT&T as a provider, but I've worked in the mobile industry for awhile now, and I know my way around things. It's the same for each of the companies. And really, think about it.
Would you want to get a bill in the mail with (possibly) HUNDREDS of pages with text messages attached to it? The companies don't do it because it's wasteful. Think of how many trees were killed for that bill! (Okay, that's a joke, and a bad one at that, but still)
Bottom line is that the companies do not add the actual messages to the bill and they cannot be requested. The servers for the companies just don't have the capacity to store the text messages for millions of customers. It's just not possible. The only thing your mom is going to get if she requests your messaging log is she is going to get the date, the time and the phone number the message was sent to or recieved at. That's it.

I know it seems illogical that companies would store text msgs by the "ga-zillions" on their servers - but they do.
Follow the logic, and the reason. If the legal machine can issue warrants for said texts to be printed for court cases - they they do, in fact, have them stored on computer servers for X amount of time. Perhaps not like financial documents where the requirement is (was?) seven years. But for at least a period of months to a year.
Remember. text (PLAIN text) is not the space hoarder that graphics, music and video are. And, compression is an amazing thing .
It is also a parent's right to know more than a minor child's right to conceal.

The period for storage is 5 days, if a court order is not made within 5 days the text is deleted from the server
I highly doubt they are storing anything at all. they are not obligated to, and it is a waste me money. and if the feds really wanted info they would just tap the phone line and collect every thing sent and recieved.
