I am a verizon customer and i am interested in upgrading to a touch phone at the end of the month. I understand that some phones require a data plan be added to your monthly bill, but i do not know which ones.
I know the Storm will require one, but what about the Omnia, the Dare, the Voyager, the Glyde, and the Krave. I am very interested in the Omnia.
Also, would unlock codes work for verizon phones? I thought their technology doesnt work the same way as att/tmobile.

Mnay of the phones have similar functions that just all work a little bit differently. AT&T and T-Mobile run on the GSM technology, where Verizon and Spring run on the CDMA technology.
As far as unlock codes working, that I couldn't tell you. But you're right about the technology being different.

Any new smartphones/blackberries will require a data plan. Basic phones like the Krave/Dare/Voyager/Glyde have a less expensive data cost per month. The Omnia requires a plan similar to the Blackberry, indentical in price.

Only smartphones (i.e. Windows Mobile and BlackBerry devices) require a data plan. The other phones can use data services, but don't require the $30 or $45 dollar add-on data plans.
Verizon (CDMA) phones are not locked. They are controlled by serial numbers--VZW won't activate a phone that's not branded to them.

It used to be that you didn't have to have a data plan except on Blackberry's. I just found out today that the policy changed recently and now any smartphone that was made after like November 14 requires a dataplan. I was wanting to get the Omnia as well because it is almost everything I was looking for, great price, etc. but after hearing this news I've decided I won't be adding another phone to my plan since the only phones that don't require a data plan don't really work for what I need.
Here is a list of the smartphones that don't require a dataplan:
Palm Centro
VZW SMT 5800
VZW XV 6800
VZW XV 6900
Motorola Q9c
Palm Treo 700wx
VZW PN-820
Basically, to me it looks like any old clunker they still have around can be used without a dataplan, but any of the nice, new shiny phones that have a ton of additional features require the dataplan. Some of these phones are so old they don't even have them on the website anymore, I'm pretty sure the one was available when I renewed my contract over two years ago (although I could certainly be wrong)
I love Verizon, I've been with them for at least 8 years and really wouldn't consider going to another carrier simply because I've used some others and find the coverage and customer service to be a lot better than I've had with others, however, I've recently noticed a lot of changes with some of their policies that are making me notice some changes in the way I think about the company. At this point in time I don't plan to switch carriers, but a few more of the problems I've been having and it may soon be something I do.
Like I said, I was ready to go get the Omnia tomorrow, but just found out tonight I'd have to get the $30 per month data plan on it. Since this would be an extra phone on my plan and I already use a Blackberry on my main line, I really don't want to have to get another data plan (even though I planned to eventually put at least e-mail on this phone) and therefore won't be adding another line to my current plan. If the policy changes I will be at Verizon as soon as I find out, but at this point in time I don't plan to get any of the phones they are offering until it changes.
