Need some objective assistance here, please, because I know there is a solution to this challenge but after trying to figure it out, I can't think straight! Here is the challenge!

1. Been with AT&T over 10 years
2. Have 4 lines on family cellphone plan
3. Want to upgrade 1 line to data
4. Upgrade would be 1 month early
5. AT&T says any smartphone eligible for early with equipment discount except iPhone
6. We really think iphone would serve our family needs best
7. It appears all the other comparable (?) options are expensive too! (it appears 249 and up)
8. Don't want to spend more than $199 for equipment; iphone at $399 until 1 month after we really do need it
9. Major usage need is good internet viewing and service, then camera, phone and email, then cool apps for kids
10. AT&T says we can purchase phone elsewhere and they will apply data pan
So - here are my questions -

1. Is there any way to get around this iPhone deal where they will not discount equipment until "official" upgrade date, esp considering how long we've been customers
2. Is there any phone 199 and below from reputable supplier that is in any way comparable to iPhone in terms of internet access, screen size, and apps? If we had to, and found something comparable that met our needs, we'd be okay
3. Where to look for best deals - love the web but this is overwhelming

Priority would be to work around AT&T 1 month limitation, as the iPhone really appears to serve our needs.

Thanks in advance for suggestions.

1. no way around the upgrade eligbility date. no exceptions at all. you can escalate the matter all you want you will recieve the ame answer.

2. check out the LG VU at the att store/website. should fit your needs. ATT **will** wiggle on that phone

3. where you are not eligible for upgrade yet the best price you are going to get is at att . (saving you some effort)

Not Always true elmo, some dealers will offer great deals on phones in return for a 2yr contract

True, on any other phone we would give him a great discount, the IPHONE unfortunately it is written in our contract with Apple that no early upgrades w/o paying the extra fee to purchase the device.

the kicker is if the customer is eligible for upgrade at the time. an authourized dealer wont upgrade until the upgrade date. an ATT store can override (early upgrade) in most cases

We had the same issue. Try Costco - they have a kiosk with ATT, plus other service representation and they will upgrade close to renew date - maybe 90 days early? Don't know if they offer all phones, but good deals on equiptment can be had.
