so, i got a new MOTOROKR E8, and i am having a LOT of trouble with the ringtones. i have motorola phone tools, and i connect with the cable. i can transfer music, and that is ok, except for that when i try and use an mp3 file as a ringtone, it is not allowed, and it either is blocked, or doesnt even show up on the list. i tried to use the melody editor, and it said i needed a codec pack. so i bought the one from motorola and avanquest, but it doesnt seem to do anything different and the ringtones still arent working. HELP PLEASE. it is driving me nuts. and i spent 8 dollars on a codec pack, which i cant work.

What carrier are you on? Some block the use of user-made ringtones, preferring to make you buy the ones they make available.

Umm, I don't know anything about Roger's policies on this.
One other thing I'll mention, and I'd be surprised of you weren't already aware of this is that the phone restricts ringtones to a certain file size. If the file is larger than this given file size, it won't see the file as a ringtone. I don't know what that size restriction is for that phone.
Hopefully, someone else can chime in with this info. Sorry I can't be more help.
Good luck,
Geri O

I have AT&T with a Pentach phone and I know I have to specifically make my ringtones under 30 seconds and LESS THAN 300kb. I threw together a site a long time ago for creating your own ringtones (for free) using a couple of free download programs.
Hope this can help.

My service is ATT - My Razr stopped working and ATT replaced it with the same model phone. I had made several ringtones for the "old" phone and when I tried to load them on the "new" phone, they would only load as songs not ringtones. Then I get the message about needing codec!
Is this codec thing new?
Did it come with the version 5 upgrade?
Is there a way to return to version 4?
thanks

Gosh, I keep hearing about that codec thing, but I never experienced it. However, about the time I tried version 5, I bought this Gateway notebook and MPT absolutely REFUSED to load on this machine. So I went with another program called either SynCell or CellSync, I wish I could remember. It worked fine and did everything MPT did and as well.
Right after that, I went with iPhones and Moto Qs. I keep the SynCell or whatever around to program the girlfriend's V3xx.
Older versions of MPT can probably be found on Ebay, like everything else.
Good luck with that, Geri O

I went ahead and paid for the Codec from MPT and the ringtones STILL will not load - wrong format!
I have always enjoyed my motorola, especially with the phone tools, but if this keeps up, I am going to ditch motorola and go with iphone or Blackberry!
I will check out cellsync or whatever!
thanks

yeah, i bought the codec pack, and it made absoultuely no difference. waste of 8 dollars.
the ringtones i have been making are under 30 seconds, and they are the right bit rate.
i also called rogers, and they had no policies on ringtones.
i also called motorola, and they couldn`t help me.
