My caller id shows up as unknown can anyone help me please?

Ever since I got my iPhone 3G in august my caller id for anyone outside my area shows up as unknown no phone number at all just unknown and its very very frustrating. I moved to college station texas from iowa and I changed my phone number to an texas number so I wouldnt have to deal with area code here. Now I'm regretting it.
Ive talked to At&t and Apple numerous amounts of times. With apple I did everything they said and restarted my phone , restored, waited for software upgrade, only use edge, gone to the apple store to see what they can do and they just gave me a new iPhone.
With At&t I've changed my sim card 4 times, had my account restarted, turned off then back on, take everything off then put back, they "sent" me "signals" to my phone to make it work. Nothing works. I might just have to get a whole new account and number but i dont want to do that. Obviously when they did the phone call test with the At&t phones it work but thats because the call directly in from att.
So please anyone who can help or has the same issue please please help me. I'm about ready to just drop At&t and the iPhone 3G when I dont want to yet. Please please help

Any cellphone will list the caller as unknown unless the person is in your contact list.
Is this your first cell phone?

Sorry to say, I am too thinking that you don't have much experience about cell phones.

AT&T does not guarantee that Caller ID works when using other carriers' networks. Whereas these features may work while roaming on certain networks, these features do not function on all carriers' networks in the same manner as they do in the customer's local calling area.
