So currently i have a samsung propel and since it isn't a smartphone i only pay $10 since i have a family plan for data [i like to browse using opera a lot when i'm bored and not near a computer].
I might buy a smartphone [at&t locked] from my friend, but since i'm not buying it directly from them, if i just pop my sim card into it will i still have to pay 30 something dollars to use the internet or will my plan stay the same?
i'm just wondering if i can just pay $10 still if put my sim card into the smartphone i'll buy. i already have unlimited text for my whole family plan so i don't think paying $30 is worth it.
also, i heard if a smartphone is unlocked you can just use a normal data plan. is this true?

Yes I did the same things. It's called the SIM swap. My girlfriend bought me a LG Shine, and I bought myself a ATT tilt, I put my sim in my LG shine and then called att. They added the service for 10/month, a day later I put the sim card back in my ATT tilt.
Its been 9 months since I have done this, and they have yet to notice. and two of those months are when I got the ATT tilt.
Good luck cuz, SuWu.

My boyfriend also does this on his phone. He is currently using a Motorola Q (smartphone-ish), but on his plan, AT&T has him using a Sony Ericsson z310a (non smart phone). He's done this since the start of his contract, and has not had any problem. I've done it on my phone in the past too, but right now, I blocked my internet to avoid charges since I took my data plan off (I'm poor!).

If you call AT&T and tell them your swapping from a non smart phone to a smart phone, they'll ask for the IMEI of the device, and if you don't have a plan that's compatible with that phone, you'll have to change it before completing the swap in AT&T's systems.
However, if you just swap the SIM card, AT&T is none the wiser. Now, some features may not be available, like push e-mail and the similar, but for the most part, internet capabilites will be fine.

always call and double check first, different providers have weird different way of screwing you out of your number if your not careful enough.
