Usually anywhere between 4 - 18 inches should work, in direct line of sight. Any strong fluroscent lights can disrupt the IR signal.

I suggest you read this article: http://homepages.tesco.net/~hcsc/irgsmphn.htm

And sometimes just uninstalling the device and reinstalling it after a restart can sove the problem.

To test the IR receiver part, you can use Stefan Peichl's
RING.COM (http://hplx.pgdn.de/ring.zip).
Start it, press enter to enter debug mode, and let something
send something to the LX via IR (for example let a cell phone
send a vcard via IR). RING should report incoming characters
(probably not readable ones, but at least there should arrive
something).

thanks for suggestions.
I tried to uninstall and reinstall driver with no sucess. Downloaded the ring.zip program and it says can't open com1 port. So it won't run. When check com ports under Phone monitor options program. There are com4 and com5 listed disabled, so enabled both. Still no sucess.
Does the usb to irda adapter suppose to blink if it finds some irda device?
I don't see anything in my HP notebook to enable or disable any com ports.
I had internal modem removed which was on com3. Every time I reboot the computer internal modem is enabled on com3. Does it has anything to do with internal modem?
just confuse why it won't work. Thanks for all your suggestions. If you have more please let me know.

DOES T300 phone need to be sending somthing in order windows xP to detect phone. I was trying to used in on my desktop but phone is not detected!!!
