After many hours of research I was finally able to find a method that works for getting custom mp3 ringtones on the Samsung Intensity without having to message them to yourself.
Software required:
1.Samsung PC Studio
2. QPST (Or other software to allow you to browse the phone's file system)
1. Install Samsung PC Studio (Will only be used to install drivers for the intensity)
2. Change USB Port Map to "Modem" on your phone
a. Go to Settings & Tools > Phone Info > and then press the # button.
b. Enter 000000 for the lock code.
c. Select option 2 "Port Map"
d. Select option 4 "USB"
e. Select option 4 "Modem"
3. Plug phone into usb port.
4. Go to device manager and install drivers for the unidentified devices
a. The drivers will be located in C:\Program Files \Samsung\Samsung PC Studio 3
5. Start QPST EFS Explorer
6. Browse to brew\mod\mr on the phone
7. Delete MrInfo.db
8. Drag and drop your mp3 ringtone files into this directory
9. Restart the phone.
10. A new MrInfo.db file will be created. Copy it to your desktop.
11. Edit the file with notepad. You should see an entry for each sound file in the directory, followed by |0|0 or something like that. For the first file change the second 0 to a 2. For the next file change that same zero to a 3, and so on. I guess the second zero just needs to be a 2, 3, or 4.
12. Copy MrInfo.db back to the phone in same directory.
13. Reboot the phone and your mp3 will show up under the "My Ringtones" menu.

When I plug my phone into my usb port w/ the cable that came with it, Samsung PC Studio Phone Explorer / QPST EFS Explorer do not recognize it as connected, even though I can see it in My Computer.
: ( any suggestions as to why?

I never messed with the Samsung PC Studio, just used it for drivers. To get the phone to show up in QPST you need to do the following:
1. Go into Device Manager
2. Look Under "Ports" for "SAMSUNG Mobile Modem."
3. Take note of the COM port listed in parenthesis i.e (COM4)
4. Open QPST Configuration from Start Menu Folder
5. Select "Ports" tab
6. Click "Add New Port." button
7. Un-check "Show Serial and USB/QA Diagnostic ports only".
8. Select COM port noted from above from the list and click OK.
9. The port will now be listed in the QPST Configuration screen and if it worked correctly, it will show some alpha-numeric value under the Phone column.
10. Close out of config and open EFS Explorer. Your phone will now be available to select.
Hope that helps.

It's listing my phone as SAMSUNG USB composite device. I'm gonna try re-installing Samsung PC studio to get the drivers in.
edit: GOT IT! thanks a bunch.

As we know, Phone ringtones are usually m4r tracks with 40 seconds or less in during. The following tutorial takes Windows PC for example, but it can also go the same way well for Mac users on Mac.
Go to iTunes - "Preferences", then set AAC as the import encoder and ensure the BitRate is 128kbps.
Select the song or video you want to make into a ringtone in your library. Right click on the song and press "Get info". Then tab the "Option" to set the duration to a maximum of 40 seconds.
Notice: The song and video must be unprotected m4p or m4v. Otherwise, you have to strip DRM license via DRM removal software.
After that, right click on that track and select the Show in Folder and drag it onto the desktop. (Remove that track from iTunes library: right click - Delete). Then rename it from "Track name .m4a" to "Track name.m4r".? Just click "Use.m4r".
Double click on the new .m4r file to add into iTunes as a ringtone which can be synced to your iPhone. Then you can trash the .m4r file on your desktop.
M oyea Video Converter also offers the function to trim or crop video as you like, therefore it is easy to get the 40 seconds for the ringtone.
Good Luck

wow ch, your method really works! thanks
i have one question though:
i put 8 ringtones on my phone and in the MrInfo.db file the last edit changed a 0 to a 10. will this have any effect? Because I noticed that 2 random ringtones showed up in "my sounds" instead of "my ringtones" and that another 2 random ringtones were no where to be found.
thanks again and any help would be appreciated
Btw, I used 128kbps mp3 tones that were max 23 secs long

Word of warning to everyone use ch's method of mp3 transfer. After adding a sound file to your phone using QPST EFS Explorer do NOT try to edit OR delete any of the ring tones using the phone's interface. Doing so has caused my phone to enter a reboot cycle that I am in the process of attempting to solve. I may need to bring it back to Verizon/Samsung.

I've done some searching on Google as well on Samsung's own website. I can load mp3s onto my phone and onto the memory card just fine. It works perfectly using Samsung PC Studio 3 and the supplied USB cable.
Unfortunately, because Verizon hates us, "only mp3s downloaded using Verizon's [blahblahblah] can be used as ringtones."
Well, that doesn't fly with me
Now I'm sure that someone here has found, or will be able to find, a way around this.
Thanks in advance for the help, guys! |
Sorry I am late for this high tech economy belt is tight.
I wish I could compose lucky you! I can not carry a tune even if it were in a bucket.
Get rid of PC Sudio and work direct block copy and paste!
To get a Ringtone on your Verizon Intensity phone, this may work with others too!
First you need to expand or upgrade you memory in the phone $12-$20 dollar Micro SD memory chip. The USB will ignore your phone connection if it is not upgraded!
Find the memory in any Computer Electronics Outlet or online.
Install it and it may already have a format if not format it.
Mate your Samsung Intensity Phone to the computer using the USB cord
Your phone’s viewer screen wills show
“Call Temporarily disabled Until USB IS Unplugged” notification!
Do not be alarmed.
Auto connection should result within 10 second! Your computer will let you know with an upbeat chime.
Then you should see a new drive letter appear in My Computer with an arbitrary heading attached to it! Proceed to Ringtone Procedure below!
If it does not have the arbitrary heading and it places the phone’s model use these instructions to help establish the proper connection.
A.) Setup the Port Map on your Phone may need to be established to permit connectivity
to the computer.
For the Samsung Intensity U450:
1.) Turn the phone on.
2.) Go to the main menu.
3.) Cursor to- Settings & Tools
4.) Cursor to 9- Phone Info
5.) Highlight My Number
6.) Press the # sign
7.) User lock is all zeros 000000- Press OK
8.) Highlight 2- Port Map - Press OK
1- DS - press OK - set it to USB
2- DM - press OK - set it to USB
3- HFK/FTC – press OK – set to NULL
4- USB – press OK – set it to COPY/MOVE FILES
9.) Escape back to the main menu
This permits you to link in a short time delay to the USB connection to the Computer.
Ringtone procedure
You need to take your favorite sound file and do a non destructive conversion to a newer extension. A QCP file extension.
Converter can be obtained at convertringtone DOT commercial
I found it to have quality sound relative to a cell phone speaker.
After Converting the audio file to handle the QCP extension just block copy past the file into the sound subfolder located under the new drive letter.
Disconnecting your USB from you Phone, you will need to find in the main menu, media Center and open Music & Tones highlight “4- MY SOUND” you should be able to find and Highlight the filename you just pasted in there.
Now just press the option button and send the file to your Phone!
Once message is received view the message and download the attachment.
It is in there for you to manipulate
