A friend is sending me their old iphone 3g. I currently have a samsung SGH-A747 with service thru AT&T. I'd really like to have the iphone as my cell phone, but don't want to pay for a $30/mo data plan - I have lots of access to wi-fi. Will simply switching the sim card work, or is there more to this? The iphone is probably locked, but as long as I'm already with AT&T I've read that this shouldn't be a problem. Thanks in advance.

Is there something that triggers AT&T discovering I'm using an iphone? I'm wondering if having them put a total data block on my current sim would keep me only using the wifi w/ the iphone, therefore keeping att out of the know.
Thanks for your feedback.

the IMEI is read by the network. att has on file every IMEI (the serial number of the device). initially you will get a useage flag text message telling you to contact customer care. then a phone call. if no response from that the rate plan is added wether you want it or not. the only way to avoid this is dont use that device,,, the same rule applies for blackberrys and PDA's . there is a grandfather pay per use rule that exempts pre-existing customers who had said devices prior to November 1, 2009 there is no exemtion for the iphone which always required the data plan
