I think the largest dowloadable file size is 300k in in one go. However, you can use the bluetooth adapter to load a file size upto the capacity of the phone. I used my adapter to transfer a 3mb (not kb!!!) mp3 across no problem.
Most mp3s I've transferred are around the 100-200kb mark so you should be able to get quite a few. Especially if you bear in mind that I still have around 25% of free storage after transferring a 3mb file.
I ordered my phone from the Littlewoods catalogue. After getting back my comission the phone effectively cost £163.00 with a free cd hi-fi valued at £50.00. Not bad.
I saw the £119 phone at the website above and logged a request in November. I still haven't heard anything...

Thanks guys... this thread gave me a great idea:
1. save the preview mp3
2. put it on my website
3. visit my site with my phone browser
4. download the ringtone
it's that simple... AND IT WORKS!!!
no need to buy a bluetooth USB adapter, although I'd still like one
well actually it didn't work first time.. got a 404. but i reduced the file size to 204kB and it worked. experiment... and post what u learn. why should we pay 2 pounds for a ringtone.... set music free!!!!!!!!!!!

Just wanted to say ta for the info on getting preview mp3`s onto the v500, I did as you said and had a crystal clear matrix telephone "buuuuuuuuurrrrghhbb" tone, complete with that weird tin foil meets windchime background noise on my phone in minutes.
Cheers

Which software (and version) are you using to do this?

I've spent an hour or so playing with a MP3 modifier and so far this is what i've found..
the best conversion/mp3 quality is..
Mono (obviously!)
32 kps
222 khrz (this is un-important but when saving you'll see the opition which begins with 22 in a drop down box...)
The software (free for 15 days) i used to cut my mp3's down to bout 30 sec (for ringtones) was..
PolderbitS Sound Recorder and Editor 3.0 build 74
its simple to use and once re-saved as the desired format (see above) they are easily bluetooth'ed / mail on a site!
Eg.
Gorecki by Lamb
51secs long
only 200kb.
enjoy.

Hi guys...
I was overjoyed to see that I access my own mp3 files for ringtones by putting them on a web page.
but it didn't work for me.
I've put a file called palomitablanca243k.mp3 on my webpage at www.gotan.ch/mobile
I can access the link thru my V500 and the entire 243k downloads (with a little audio icon to the left of the download info).
but then my phone says... INVALID FILE FORMAT
any ideas?
maybe the mp3 is required to be monotone?

Hi,
It has been a while since I have look at this site and am pleasantly surprised to see how much interest this has generated.
I use Audacity at http://audacity.sourceforge.net which is totally free and can record music before converting them into MP3s. Alternatively, I just download the sample polyphonic ringtone from any given ringtone site and transfer it to my V500 using my USB adapter.
If you create your own sample, it shouldn't matter whether it is poly or mono. MP3 is just the format. If it comes up invalid file format then I suggest you recreate the MP3.
If I get the chance, I'll have an experiment for you.

First I tried sending an mp3 to my phone via email, but that didn't work. For some reason there didn't seem to be an attachment. Then I read this thread and posted it to my website. Went to the URL and downloaded it. It is now my ringtone!!! This is sweet! No more looking for ringtones and paying for them when I can create my own of better quality and to suit exactly what I want.
My phone is Motorola V400 and I used SoundForge to create a 30 sec mp3 out of the song I wanted.
Let the ignorant fill up pockets of the cell phone companies (ringtones was a $3 billion industry last year and expected to jump to $5 billion this year). We gonna make our own shit!

Hello,
I just bought a Motorola V400. I purchased a ringtone from Cingular and noticed it was an MP3. So I tried uploading a short mp3 clip to my website, so I could then download it on my phone. After It completed downloading, I tried playing it and it gave an error like "file corrupt, delete?"
Is there some special way I should be saving my MP3? (certain bitrate or something?)
Some info on this file:
Duration: 16 sec
Bitrate: 24kbps
Channels: 2 (stereo)
Sample Rate: 11Khz
