Hi, this is my first post and I would be extremely grateful for any assistance with the following queries:

I have set up a mobile phone e-mail account with Orange (Pay As You Go) up but I am having a few difficulties in obtaining a particular polyphonic ringtone, which my wife was able to download to her Sharp GX10i.

It looks like there is a mechanism in place to stop people buying ringbones and simply texting them to their family or mates. It sends it as a picture message instead which you then view from the website.

Is it possible for my wife to send it as an e-mail attachment instead, and for me to obtain it this way?

If not, I think the easiest way is to download it direct to my phone, but the Motorola V500 is not listed on the the various website compatibility charts. I have tried phoning, as listed in the contact details for assistance, but am asked to leave various details on their answering machine (which I am very reluctant to do).

Are all polyphonic ringtones the same, and can I simply state that my phone is a Motorola T720i instead of a V500 in the relevant box. Will it then download and work?

Also, my Motorola V500 can play mp3 tones. I have a small mp3 sound on my PC that I would like to use as a ringtone, can this be done?

I tried e-mailing it to my phone - but it won't let me access it. It tells me there is an e-mail waiting but I can only access it through the website. The phone can see it and it can be viewed on the website but I cannot download it onto the phone. As my e-mail size on my mobile is set up to 65556 k (about 6mb) and the e-mail I have sent is much smaller than this (about 3mb), is there a reason why it won't download?

Orange indicate that mp3 tones for phones are slightly different to conventional mp3s so they can't be used. Do you know if this is true?

If it will play, and as an alternative, could this be sent using bluetooth technology from my PC? If so, what hardware and/or software do I need to transfer the data?

I know I am asking an awful lot, but any help will be greatly appreciated.

Ok, here is some interesting information...

First of all I took a gamble and purchased a bluetooth USB adapter to see if I could use it to transfer my MP3 files from my PC to my V500 and use them as ringtones.

IT WORKED!!!!

Not only that, most ringtone sites preview their tones in the mp3 format. Simply right click on the sound preview and select 'save target as' to download. These can then be copied to the V500 using the bluetooth adapter, completely free - subject to any ISP charges. Set it as a ringtone and you're away!!!

With regards to my e-mail problem. I have been advised by Orange that their gateway is currently restricted to about 128k e-mails. Useful to know.

In addition to this, any one who wishes to set up an Orange e-mail account will need to bear the following in mind when entering their details onto the V500.

The user ID is NOT the e-mail address, but an obscure code associated with their account. I had to obtain mine from the Orange Technical Support Line as I could not see it after I had registered on their website. Once I had entered this with my password and e-mail address (which goes in the 'return address' field) it worked fine.

So, onto the phone itself and is it any good... in a nutshell - IT IS BLOODY BRILLIANT!!!

It has all the features I could possibly want and is just pure class. So far I have no faults with it at all, but as I have only had it since Christmas I will reserve final judgement for now (I've not tried to download any games etc). At the moment, the more I use it, the more impressed I become with its features.

The only small critisism is that a lot of websites do not show this phone on their compability charts so some ringtones may be difficult to obtain. However, I have overcome this as explained previously. No doubt this phone will appear on these charts once it has become more established.

Would I recomend this phone - OH YES!!!

Maybe the V600 is the flagship with its video capailities, but this does everything else (video was never something that interests me on a moble phone anyway - that's why I have a digital camcorder!!).

If you want the best, then buy it!!! I am sure you won't be dissapointed.

Hi,

They are available in the UK. I got mine from PC World for £29.99, but you can get one on Ebay for around £15.00 - £20.00.

Kind Regards

Thanks guys... this thread gave me a great idea:
1. save the preview mp3
2. put it on my website
3. visit my site with my phone browser
4. download the ringtone
it's that simple... AND IT WORKS!!!
no need to buy a bluetooth USB adapter, although I'd still like one icon_smile.gif

well actually it didn't work first time.. got a 404. but i reduced the file size to 204kB and it worked. experiment... and post what u learn. why should we pay 2 pounds for a ringtone.... set music free!!!!!!!!!!!

Is there a maximum file size(mp3) that can be used/stored on the V500?

The PAYG version is due in about 4 weeks at about £150.00

I've been wondering how to transfer these MP3 files to my cell & use as ringtones. I KNEW there had to be a way. I have a Motorola T720. Do you think I can put the MP3 on a personal web page and download it as you did?
