This might be a dumb question but I'm new at this cellular stuff. Cingular is being retarded and won't let me upgrade my phone for another 9 months and I don't want to wait. Anyways right now I have a Motorola v60 that is on the TDMA network and I am wanting to get a Samsung phone that is on the GSM network without switching my phone number. How do I go about doing this? I know I need to get a SIM card but I don't know what else or how to activate it. Thanks

Actually, you can upgrade at a company store. if you are going to switch to GSM, they will allow you to upgrade.

hehe... they will allow you to upgrade anytime, you will just have to buy the phone full retail
if you wanted the contract discount you would probably have to wait the 9 months.
All you really need is the phone and a new SIM and call customer service ... and your in buisness

The rule is that the customer has to fulfill at least the entire contract or can upgrade if there is 3 months remaining on the contract. Otherwise, you'd have to purchase the phone outright in order to take advantage of the GSM service and all the new phones we've got now.

there are a few times they will make exceptions, especially if the customer has TDMA, has been a customer for more than a few years, and/or spends bucko bucks with them

What I would recommend if you REALLY want this phone is that you walk into your local Cingular store and add a phone to your family talk plan. This enables you to buy a phone at contract cost. You then take the sim card in your old phone, put it in the new one and shred the new SIM card so that no one can use it. I might be of some more help to you. Contact me at any time. Email me: LuvFordTrux@Yahoo.com
I also work with bills. If you have any questions, email me anytime. I help with really high Cingular bills. I know how to help people who run up there minutes really bad. I might be able to think of something else regarding that new phone. My name is Kevin by the way.

Ok...here's the deal. It is market specific. If you aren't in a so called "converted market," meaning TDMA > GSM , then you are only eligible to upgrade to what is called a GAIT phone. The two Multi-technology (GAIT) phones Cingular sells are: Sony Ericsson T62U and the Nokia 6340i. Right now, if your market converted to GSM from TDMA and you have a TDMA phone and are at least 6 months in your contract...whether it be 1 or 2, they will authorize and early upgrde (purchasing a phone at a discount when signing a contract). But on the flip side, if your market hasn't converted yet, such as: Alabama and Mississippi, you will need to wait until the conversion date which is I think June-July of this year....or you can upgrde to the above mention GAIT phone. Now the GAIT phone is compatible on the GSM network but you will not receive all the benefits of GSM technology therefore you aren't considered GSM. Depending on the problem with your phne you can do an insurance claim if you have it ($3.99 a month, $50 deductible), upgrde to GAIT or if it is within one year of purchase, it may fall under the warranty. There are many factors Cingular takes into account, whether it be your tenure...market... payment history... etc... when upgrading...What I can suggest is to call Customer Service, 611 from your cell phone or 800-331-0500 from landline and discuss your options....they will be more than happy to explain everything to you. Any more questions you can email me at: geyser44@iwon.com...hope this helps!?

Gixxer, I gotta call Bullshit.
I've called Cingular twice. I've talked calmly with them about upgrading me off my v60t so I can change my plan from a 350 to an 800+ min plan. I made it a point to say that I'm going to spend more money with them and that they should think of this as an opportunity. I said "give me solutions" to my problem. They gave me NONE. They said, maybe I could buy a phone at full retail or visit a store and see if they have any returns they'd sell at a discount, etc. I've been a Cingular (SWB) customer for YEARS and they aren't giving me any slack.
I'm about ready to pay the $150 to get out of my contract so I can take my business elsewhere and get a phone at a promo price.
