I currently have a Nokia 6340i with Cingular. I am thinking of upgrading to a Motorola V400. My question is can I swap the sim card back and forth between the phones? The reason for asking is that I have a hands free car kit for the Nokia and I really hate the idea of losing that while I drive.
Is this something that Cingular allows?
Thanks,
David

Yes, you can.
Your provider can't dis-allow you to use a phone.

You will experiance a problem. Bjorn is correct that Cingular cant disallow you to use a phone..
But the Nokia 6340i and the V400 are two diffrent technologys. 6340 being GAIT and v400 being GSM. Granted they both use SIM cards, but Cingular sets up these two types of phones in their billing system diffrently.
I can almost guarentee you that you will expeiance a few problems ( ie. Roaming charges and such) due to the Technological incompatibilitys

FWIW in case it matters, I am currently on a nationwide (no roaming) plan with my current GAIT phone.
Should that make a difference?

Well....I think both of the replies are correct but at the same time, the SIM and the IMEI in Cingular's billing system will be associated. Therefore if you attempt to put the SIM into your nokia 6340i from your V400...it will bill you according to what you have as your pricing plan. The GSM technology registered in Cingular's Billing won't change b/c the IMEI will still be registered as GSM. Know you will not receive the benefits of GSM but it should work...Try it a few times the first month and check your bill....

I currently have a Samsung s307 and a Nokia 6340i. I use the small S307 in cities and when I travel to rural areas I put my SIM in the 6340i. It works for me.

Here's a similar ??. I was with AT&T and on they're TDMA system when i opted to get a new phone. They really didn't have anything that i liked on the GSM network (originally i wanted the nokia6560), i ended up just going with something that the sales rep suggested that i thought sounded good, the Siemans M56 (the little orange one). Well, i hated it and took it back like four days later, but i kept the SIM card. Now i have the v400 with Cingular and love it but was curious if i could swap out my cingular SIM for my AT&T SIM without any problems. I also heard that the Cingular SIM locks alot of features on the v400 that other SIM cards can unlock. Anyone know anything about this??

I'm not sure about Cingular locking out some features (I'm curious about this, too, now - hopefully someone will post), but the AT&T sim card will work perfectly in the V400. I have Cingular and my boyfriend as AT&T Wireless w/ a T68i, and I did an experiment and his card worked fine in my V400 - it displayed his contacts and "AT&T Wireless" instead of Cingular on the main screen.

Yes you can swap sim cards. However the sim card is not what makes your phone work with cingular. Its the codes listed under the battery of your phone. Your sim card simply acts as memory, containing phone numbers and ect. To be able to switch phones on you account, the Cingular database would need both sets of codes from the two phones. For this to happen you would need family plan that would support the two phones. So unless you have familytalk plan it wont work.
