I have a Siemens S56 on Cingular. I really don't like the phone and want to get a different one. Am limited to the GSM phones I see on the CIngular website or can I use any GSM phone on the market? I am hoping I can find the gsm phone I want and just switch the sim. Is it that easy? icon_cry.gif

1. You can use every GSM-Phone you want
2. Yes, it's that easy. Switch the SIM, maybe you've got to do some changes in the settings of the phone (voicebox number, WAP-Settings, etc.) but it's simple.

Primarily it is failry simple. But if lets say you go to Ebay and purchase a phone but it was orginally operating on T-Mobile, well T-Mobile may actually have that phone SOC locked...What you will need to do is unlock the phone first in order to use it on another carrier....Also be sure that the frequency the phone operates will be compatible with your carrier.....

Any GSM phone that is unlocked is able to run on the Cingular network. As long as it is SIM card compatible and is unlocked, your okay.

hmmmm...

I'd have to disagree. The GSM band in North America is 1900 whereas in Europe and Asia it is 1800. So, unless the particular GSM phone you're going to use is a "true" tri-band, then you will be out of luck.

Unfortunately it is not that simple. Cingular uses 2 GSM frequencies- you would need to use a handset that uses both 850/1900 MHz. If you use a "Single Band" GSM phone, you will experience coverage gaps or excessive roaming where you would have Cingular coverage with a "Dual Band" phone.

true that- make sure you have the right frequency (850/1900) or you'll just be wasting time.
