Just spent the last 4-5 hours trying to get "moble phone tools" and "PST phone programmer" to work. Had the most success w/ moble phone tools; does copy files, syncs w/ calender and contacts. but have no success use the phone as a modem. the phone does act like it is going to dail, shows the numers being dailed and then disconnets. Phone is V400, service is Cingular, and PC is XP. Drivers for the phone show as 'usb modem' and 'motorola usb modem', both drivers have same effect. BTW, my neighbors phone v60 which connected fine.
"PST phone programmer" installed but kept asking for data interface drivers and others drivers that I couldn't find driver for either. And now after trail and error, I reInstalled the software, the drivers are in the C:\Program Files\Motorola\PST directory.
Anyone with experiance w/ phonetools expert, any luck w/ it on a V400, It sees the phone however the software seems to be more into programming phone rather then managing it and connecting the phone to an ISP like a modem.

I have the same problem. I was wondering that cingular has that option disabled.
What you think?

I have the same phone and the same service and aparently the same exact problem. I can have the computer use the phone as a modem and and then when it send the number to the phone it will dial the number on the phone and then instantly disconnect. If anyone ever figures it out please e-mail me at andylbing0557@yahoo.com. I work 3rds and have 8 hours to kill everynight but no internet to help kill it, figuring this out would help alot.
Thanks

This appears to be a fundamental problem, and not just our setups.
I just purchased the mobile PhoneTools to use my V400 (Cingular) as a dial-up modem to connect to Earthlink when travelling. I have it installed on a WinXP Pro SP1 laptop.
The software starts to dial the number, but then the phone immediately gives the 3-tone 'wrong number' sound, then disconnects. It seems as if the software is working okay and sending the number, but the phone is killing the connection.
I will be calling the Motorola support number this week (800-331-6456) to see if they can provide assistance.

Whelp, I got a Motorola v220 today (v400 little brother) and spent the last 7 hours trying to get the thing to dial into my ISP. Luckily I just found this thread. I HAVE THE SAME EXACT F##KING PROBLEM AS IS BEING DESCRIBED HERE. I'll call Motorola tomorrow but I think this piece of junk is going back. I will get the Sony that comes with drives so I don't have to comb the internet to find them this time.

This is not a problem with the phones...
This is a problem resulting from Cingular (and other wireless companies). To use a phone as a USB modem on a Cingular GSM network you MUST BE SUBSCRIBED to GPRS service. Maybe this info will help others in the future.

Craig that is NOT the truth.
I have FULL service with cingular, and I am having the SAME exact problem. I have called them, andthey dont know what it is either.
I think it might be that you have to dial some kind of number, before it dials.
Someone needs to post the answer when they find it.
