First of all motorola didn't know how to do it and it took me a few days to figure it out but it works now...
You must encode the mp3 at a frequency of 32000 at a bit rate of 128kbps mono the file size must remain under 100K.
That's it!
Remember not all mp3 encoders allow you to choose a frequency AND bitrate. The V600 is very specific as to what will work. Just like the wav files, which have to be 8kHz at 8 bit in order to play. I don't understand why none of this is in their documentation with the phone or with Mobile Phone Tools but it's not.
Hope this helps,
Andrew

Will this method of uploading stuff via USB Bluetooth adapter work on a V525 as well?

you couldnt be any more incorrect.
i have used these settings and they sound / work great
A) 44K / 22K sound quality.
B) anywhere from 32kbps -> 128kbps compression
C) Mono <-- i havent tried stereo, there is only 1 speaker
D) i trim my songs to 30seconds. there is no need for additional ringer as it wont play.
E) trim all sounds under 120Hz, as it wont play right on the phone. <-- this is not required, i just do it so that bass doesnt distort the phones ring. (im picky)
my files end up being at or near 250kb in size. and i have about 4 differnt rings on there now and i still have 60% of my phone free. i also have a handfull of pictures on there as well...
I admit I am nowhere near as saavy with PC's etc as you all seem to be. I have a v525 (same as v600) as like many want to use my mp'2 for ringtones/\. I have read the previous replies in this post and see some good suggestions. as tryptonite suggested I downloaded audacity and am still trying to figure it out.
can someone just suggest to me the simplest and easiest way to edit and/compress files so I may use them as a ringtone. PLease also suggest any other software you may reccommend
Thanks

i dunno if its been said yet but you guys should all try diet mp3. I used Dbpoweramp to convert my tones and then you use Diet Mp3. It makes your mp3s half the size letting me put almost 20 or more mp3 rings on my phone.

AUDACITY is a good program and easy to use, just load your mp3 in the cut a 25 secon section that you like then --> save selction--> export as mp3 to where ever you want to stored then just us you mpt or bluetooth then drag and drop. If you don't have mp3 use Real one to save your song in to it liabery under mp3 format. Or you can go to the spec that mention by couple guys in here so chosse you poission

I'm having the same problems with playing MP3's on my V600. I have the Mobile Phone tools, cable and all that. I can transfer my Mp3 to the phone, however, when I go to play it, it gives me an error saying the data is corrupt or something. File I attempted to play was.
50 seconds
32kbs bitrate
32khz frequency
Stereo
The only thing I can think of is that it gets confused with the stereo playback and that is why it's giving the error. I will post results with a mono-mp3 file... I'm using Sound Forge 6.0 to make my mp3's...
Another easy to use editing software is call mp3 cutter. It is a trail verison though.

I use audacity also. It's a great program for us. Free and legal. I've gotten pretty good at using it to create my mp3 ringtones, so anyone can ask me about it if they get stuck and I'll walk them through it.
